Our roles in optics are wonderfully diverse, and Heather Muir recently proved just how far-reaching they can be. As our expert contact lens technician, Heather played a vital behind-the-scenes role in Netflix’s latest blockbuster series, Department Q.
Brought on set for her specialist expertise, Heather ensured the safe handling, fitting, and maintenance of custom contact lenses throughout the shoot.
She worked closely with actor Steven Miller over the course of the production and spent a day assisting Kai Alexander, providing on-the-spot lens support during key scenes. Heather also collaborated with acclaimed makeup designer Lizzi Lawson-Zeiss, whose credits include Napoleon and Blade Runner, as well as a team of skilled makeup artists to ensure seamless integration of eye care into the Edinburgh-based series.
The lenses themselves designed by the Reel Eye Company and were supplied by Cantor Barnard, a renowned Northamptonshire-based firm with more than 60 years of experience in the film industry. Their custom-crafted lenses were designed to align perfectly with the characters’ aesthetics and the show's cinematic vision.
Directed by Scott Frank and based on the internationally best-selling novels, Department Q premiered in Edinburgh this week.
