Our friends at the Association of Optometrists have created a new campaign to help raise awareness of glaucoma. The main message is: get it spotted early, even before you notice the signs, and this will give you the best chance of managing it effectively.
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to increased pressure inside the eye. It’s one of the leading causes of preventable blindness, yet many people are unaware they have it until significant vision loss has already occurred. That’s because glaucoma usually develops slowly and without pain, earning it the nickname "the silent thief of sight."
Early detection is key
Because symptoms often go unnoticed, routine eye tests are essential. Optometrists can detect the early signs of glaucoma through simple, non-invasive checks, even before you experience any vision problems. Catching it early means treatment can begin promptly, reducing the risk of permanent damage.
Who is most at risk?
While glaucoma can affect anyone, certain factors increase your risk. These include being over 40, having a family history of the condition, being of African, Caribbean, or Asian descent, and having other health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure. If you fall into one or more of these categories, regular eye exams are especially important.
Protecting your vision
There’s currently no cure for glaucoma, but with early diagnosis and ongoing management, most people retain useful vision for life. That’s why this new campaign is so vital, it’s about encouraging everyone to prioritise their eye health and take proactive steps to protect their sight.
Take action today
If it’s been a while since your last comprehensive eye examination, book an appointment today. It could make all the difference. Remember, spotting glaucoma early is the best way to stop it in its tracks.
