Alexandra Young

Optometrist - Clinical lead

BSc(Hons) | MCOptom DipTP(IP) | MSc Primary Care Ophthalmology

Alexandra Young is a highly skilled specialist optometrist with extensive experience in advanced paediatric eye care, complex contact lens fitting, myopia management, and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic eye conditions. Since qualifying in 2010, she has become one of Scotland’s most trusted optometrists for families seeking expert care for children’s eye conditions and patients requiring hospital grade clinical expertise within a community setting.

Alexandra divides her time between Cameron Optometry and the NHS, working at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh and St John’s Hospital in Livingston. Her hospital practice includes joint orthoptic and optometry clinics, paediatric uveitis screening and monitoring, as well as consultant-led paediatric clinics, and she has prior experience in post operative cataract review clinics and glaucoma monitoring. This breadth of experience allows her to manage complex presentations confidently and to support children with conditions such as strabismus, anisometropia and amblyopia. She is particularly skilled at adapting examinations for neurodiverse children and for patients who feel nervous or anxious about attending eye appointments.

In clinical practice at Cameron Optometry, Alexandra provides comprehensive eye examinations for adults and children, advanced dry eye diagnosis and in-practice treatment, and management of urgent eye problems through Independent Prescribing. She has specialist expertise in fitting complex medical contact lenses for keratoconus and irregular corneas, supported by additional training with Menicon and extensive in-house mentorship. Alexandra has also completed recognised training in myopia management, including MiSight and Miyosmart certification.

Her academic background includes a Masters in Primary Care Ophthalmology with distinction from the University of Edinburgh, the Professional Certificate in Paediatric Eye Care, the Professional Certificate in Low Vision, and Therapeutic Prescribing for Optometrists. Alexandra regularly attends national clinical conferences and CPD events to ensure that her practice reflects the latest research and technologies in specialist optometry. She has contributed to research and postgraduate education in Scotland and has experience teaching trainee ophthalmologists, orthoptists, and optometrists.

Earlier in her career, Alexandra also worked in refractive surgery, managing patients before and after procedures such as LASIK, LASEK, PRK, refractive lens exchange, and implantable contact lenses. This experience gives her an in-depth understanding of surgical pathways and supports her ability to guide patients considering vision correction options.

Patients value Alexandra for her clinical expertise, calm approach, and exceptional communication skills, particularly when working with children and anxious patients. Her combination of NHS specialist experience and advanced community practice places her among the most versatile and highly trained optometrists in Scotland.

Outside of work, Alexandra lives in Midlothian with her partner and young daughter. She enjoys travelling, baking, yoga, pilates, spin classes, and has recently taken up embroidery.
