Qualifcations: BSc.(Hons) MCOptom | DipTP(IP) | Prof Cert Med Ret

Claire Keith is a highly experienced specialist optometrist with more than 30 years in eye care. She joined Cameron Optometry in 2014 and brings exceptional depth of clinical knowledge, particularly in myopia management, complex contact lens fitting, and medical retina. Her long standing experience, combined with advanced prescribing ability, allows her to deliver thorough and personalised eye care for patients with both routine and complex visual needs.

Claire qualified with a BSc Honours degree in Optometry from Aston University and has been a Member of the College of Optometrists since completing her professional qualifying examination. She later gained the Diploma in Independent Prescribing, enabling her to diagnose and manage eye disease and prescribe appropriate treatments without delay. She also holds the Professional Certificate in Medical Retina, supporting her expertise in retinal conditions and the monitoring of patients with systemic disease such as diabetes.

A major focus of Claire’s clinical work is complex contact lens fitting, including hospital grade lenses provided under specialist contact lens schemes. She is highly experienced in fitting a wide range of lenses for patients with challenging prescriptions and ocular conditions, including orthokeratology lenses for overnight vision correction. Claire was among the first optometrists in Scotland to specialise in orthokeratology and continues to provide myopia management using both contact lenses and spectacle based interventions. She regularly fits multifocal contact lenses and is particularly skilled at helping patients who struggle with near vision or who have previously been told that no suitable solution exists.

Claire’s clinical background includes hospital based training during her pre-registration year and early career, along with ongoing work in a private hospital setting where she reviews patients before and after cataract surgery. This experience supports her ability to manage complex cases and to work closely with ophthalmologists when required. For more than a decade, Claire has also prepared expert witness reports on a wide range of ophthalmic cases, including delayed diagnosis of keratoconus, glaucoma, and choroidal melanoma, visual field loss due to neurological disease, and complications following refractive surgery. This work reflects her detailed understanding of clinical standards.

She has facilitated continuing education and peer review events for fellow optometrists and remains committed to lifelong learning. Claire is currently developing further expertise in diabetes related eye disease to enhance her clinical services further.

Patients value Claire for her calm, empathetic manner and her ability to relate to their visual challenges. Having worn a wide variety of contact lenses and spectacles herself, and having experienced her own eye conditions, she brings genuine insight and reassurance to her consultations. She also has basic knowledge of sign language, which can be helpful for some patients.

Outside of practice, Claire enjoys long walks, particularly with her beagle Mabel, and has practised yoga for over 25 years, with hot yoga being a particular favourite. She values time spent outdoors and a balanced approach to health and wellbeing.
