Emma Drewery

Behavioural optometrist

Qualifications: BSc(Hons) MCOptom | MBABO Dip Sport Vision | BABO

Emma Drewery is a highly experienced behavioural optometrist with specialist expertise in neurodevelopmental vision, vision therapy, and neuro optometric rehabilitation. She is one of only two optometrists in Scotland accredited by the British Association of Behavioural Optometrists, placing her among a very small number of clinicians nationally with recognised advanced training in this field. Emma provides specialist assessments and therapy for children and adults whose visual difficulties impact learning, development, performance, or recovery from neurological injury.

Emma holds a BSc Honours degree in Optometry and is a Member of the College of Optometrists. She has completed extensive postgraduate training in behavioural and neuro developmental optometry, including a Diploma in Sports Vision, and is an Independent Prescribing optometrist. She is trained by, and a member of both the British Association of Behavioural Optometrists and the Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation Association, reflecting her dual expertise in developmental and acquired neurological vision conditions. Her additional training includes bilateral integration and primitive reflexes, supporting her holistic approach to visual development and neuroplasticity.

Emma’s clinical expertise covers a wide range of specialist areas, including neurodevelopmental and behavioural vision, amblyopia and strabismus, binocular vision disorders, visual processing difficulties, visual stress, and colour sensitivity. She works extensively with children and young people with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, developmental coordination disorder, and fine and gross motor difficulties such as dysgraphia. Emma also supports patients with visual snow syndrome, concussion related vision problems, and those undergoing neuro rehabilitation following neurological injury.

Alongside her developmental work, Emma has specialist expertise in sports vision, helping athletes optimise visual skills such as tracking, reaction time, depth perception, and visual processing. She also provides colourimetry assessments and advanced binocular vision care. Emma runs a dedicated vision therapy clinic at Cameron Optometry and is also available for routine eye care.

Emma’s previous experience includes work at Newcastle Royal Infirmary in general eye clinics and specialist contact lens services, followed by roles in both multiple and independent optometry practices across Scotland. She later ran her own optometry practice for ten years and has also worked in private eye clinics specialising in pre and post operative cataract care, laser eye surgery, and complex corneal conditions. This broad clinical background allows her to integrate behavioural optometry within a strong medical and diagnostic framework.

In addition to her clinical work, Emma is an active educator within the profession. She lectures and facilitates courses in neurodevelopmental and behavioural optometry, is a course facilitator for BABO, and serves on the BABO education committee. She regularly receives referrals and is consulted by teachers, occupational therapists, and fellow optometrists for expert opinion on complex visual and developmental cases.

Emma is strongly neurodiversity aware and passionate about early years development, neuroplasticity, education, and the role of nutrition in visual and neurological health. Patients and families value her compassionate, thorough approach and her ability to explain complex visual concepts in a clear and supportive way.
