Qualifications: BSc(Hons) | MCOptom | DipCLP | DipTP(IP) | FBCLA
Ian Cameron is one of the UK’s most respected and experienced specialist optometrists, with more than 20 years in clinical practice. He is widely recognised for his expertise in glaucoma, complex eye disease, and advanced clinical decision making, and is often referred patients with challenging or uncommon ocular conditions from across Scotland and beyond.
Ian qualified with a BSc Honours degree in Optometry in 2003 and became a Member of the College of Optometrists in 2004. He went on to complete the Diploma in Contact Lens Practice and the Diploma in Independent Prescribing, allowing him to assess, diagnose, and medically manage eye disease independently. In 2011, he was awarded Fellowship of the British Contact Lens Association, becoming one of the youngest optometrists in the organisation’s history to achieve this distinction. Fellowship status reflects the highest level of clinical expertise, research involvement, and professional contribution within the field.
Although Ian is best known nationally for his work in contact lenses and was previously named Contact Lens Practitioner of the Year, his current clinical focus is on glaucoma and complex ocular pathology. He completed the NES Glaucoma Assessment Training in 2021 and has extensive experience in managing patients with glaucoma within both community and referral based pathways. His Independent Prescribing qualification enables him to provide complete care, from diagnosis and monitoring through to treatment and prescription, without unnecessary hospital referral where safe and appropriate.
Ian’s early career included hospital based training at Manchester Eye Hospital, work within a specialist contact lens research unit, and teaching undergraduate practical refraction at the University of Manchester. He has remained closely involved in clinical research throughout his career, particularly practice based research relating to contact lenses. He is a highly experienced lecturer and speaker, delivering education across a wide range of subjects including clinical optometry, eye disease, leadership, research, and business development.
Ian is also regularly called upon by regional and national media to comment on eye health related stories, providing expert clinical insight on numerous topics. His ability to translate complex clinical information into clear, practical advice has made him a trusted voice on eye health for the wider public.
As managing director of Cameron Optometry, Ian has built one of the most clinically advanced independent optometry practices in the UK. Under his leadership, Cameron Optometry has won multiple national awards, including UK Independent Practice of the Year, and became the first practice in the UK to have eight Independent Prescribing optometrists. He continues to invest in market leading diagnostic technology and to develop a multidisciplinary team capable of delivering hospital level care within a community setting.
Ian is particularly committed to inclusive, patient-centred care and has a strong understanding of neurodiversity and the additional challenges faced by some children and families when accessing healthcare. This informs both his clinical approach and the culture he has fostered within the practice.
Outside of work, Ian commutes by motorbike and enjoys staying active through gym training and running. He takes part in endurance events, is a keen musician, and values time spent with his wife and three children.
